CARE staff who are continuing their vital work supporting local people with learning disabilities throughout the Covid-19 crisis have received a welcome PPE boost from employees of Volvo Group UK.
A team of 15 volunteers from Volvo Group companies Renault Trucks, Volvo Trucks, Volvo Bus and Volvo Financial Services – who are currently on furlough -have been incredibly hard at work producing thousands of single use, disposable plastic aprons for front-line health workers, including those working in hospices and the care sector.
On Friday (June 6th) the team handed over 3,500 aprons to Heart of England Mencap in Stratford, a charity which supports local people with learning disabilities across South Warwickshire and in Worcestershire.
Helena Wallis, Chief Executive of Heart of England Mencap, said: “Our amazing team continue to work on the front-line to support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities throughout the Covid-19 crisis. The safety of our staff and of the people we support is our absolute priority and donations of PPE like this are ensuring we can continue to care safely. We are incredibly grateful to the team at Volvo UK for their hard work and generosity.”
Working out of Volvo Group UK’s Warwick headquarters, the volunteers, who are all currently on furlough, have returned under strict ‘COVID-secure’ guidelines to manufacture around 1,000 per day of the single use, disposable plastic aprons that play an essential role in protecting care workers and the people they are supporting.
The template for the aprons was supplied by Renault Trucks France, where the initiative originated. Executive Assistant at Renault Trucks UK & Ireland, Vickie Thomas, who heads up the UK team of volunteers, explains: “When our Managing Director, Carlos Rodrigues, heard that colleagues in Lyon were making disposable aprons to help front-line workers, he contacted me to see if any of our furloughed colleagues in the UK would be interested in doing the same here. We quickly established a team of fifteen volunteers from across the Group, including Volvo Trucks and Volvo Bus as well as Renault Trucks.
“There’s a great sense of camaraderie here, the music’s on and we’re all pleased to give our time to help those on the front-line with much needed PPE.”
As well as supporting Heart of England Mencap, the Volvo team have also donated aprons to The Myton Hospices and The Shakespeare Hospice.
And Carlos Rodrigues, Renault Trucks UK & Ireland Managing Director, has visited the apron production line to lend a hand.
